The Catalan newspaper Sport is reporting today that the Catalan giants are set to move into the race for Southampton centre back Dejan Lovren, a man who had been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool.
Lovren has been at the centre of controversy at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, with his hand having brushed the shoulder of Brazilian striker Fred in an incident that saw the Japenese referee controversially award a penalty to the tournament hosts in their 3-1 opening win over Croatia.
The 24 year-old, who only arrived at St. Mary’s from Ligue 1 side Lyon last summer, has enjoyed a particularly impressive debut season in English football and his established himself as a key part of the Southampton side that impressed many with their compact but creative displays.
Lovren, who emerged at Dinamo Zagreb before securing a move to the former French champions, has been reported to have handed in a transfer request in the past week as he looks to push through a move to a bigger club and become a part of the mass exodus that is seeing Southampton’s summer descend into something of a farce.
New Barcelona manager Luis Enrique is expected to look to strengthen his defence this summer after the retirement of Carles Puyol, a move which may allow them to move Javier Mascherano back into his favoured defensive midfield position.
Liverpool also have defensive woes to attend to, with the eye-watering number of goals conceded by the Reds last season arguably being the thing that cost Brendan Rodgers’ men the title.
