A defensive midfielder turned centre half, what the Argentine lacks in height, he more than makes up for in his consummate reading of the game and fierce competitiveness.
In the absence of injured club captain Carles Puyol, Mascherano has stepped up to assume the role of senior defender for Barca and the former Liverpool star has not disappointed, alongside a number of partners, including youngster Marc Bartra.
Mascherano’s time in midfield has made him comfortable on the ball but he is strong in the tackle and rarely slips up.
