Coach curtly rejects offer to join Bavarians’ board.
Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes has bluntly rejected an offer to join the German giants’ advisory board when he steps down at the end of the season.
With his side hosting Arsenal on Wednesday in Munich holding a commanding 3-1 lead in the Champions League last 16, second leg tie, the 67-year-old Heynckes will step down at the end of the season to be replaced by Pep Guardiola.
With the former Barcelona boss taking office on July 1, Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge offered Heynckes a place on the advisory board in an interview with a Munich newspaper last Saturday, but the offer has fallen flat.
“It would have been better if he had spoken to me about it first,” said Heynckes curtly.
“After 50 years in football, I’m not going to take a position as a club official, that’s not my world.
“At the end of the season, I’ll make public what I will be doing in the future.”
Heynckes made it clear the Bayern offer does not interest him, and “certainly not, when I hear about it from the media” having given a curt reply when asked about it live on air by a German Sky Sports reporter last Saturday.
Bayern broke the news Guardiola will join them, on a three-year contract, in January, much to Heynckes’ annoyance as he faced a barrage of questions about his successor when his team were preparing for their first league game of 2013.
In his third stint as Bayern coach, Heynckes has yet to lift any silverware in his three years since taking charge again in July 2010, but with his side 20-points clear in the Bundesliga, that is very likely to change soon.
Munich can be confirmed champions as early as April 6, if they win their next three games, and having reached the semi-finals, they are favourites to win the German Cup with the final in Berlin on June 1.
