Post 8 – Materiality
Jockey: John Velazquez
Trainer: Todd Pletcher
Alto Racing LLC
Much like Frosted, Materiality presents one of the best chances of upsetting American Pharoah to win the Belmont. The second of Todd Pletcher’s two horses in the race, Materiality took first place in the Florida Derby before a disappointing 6th place finish in the Kentucky Derby.
Jockey John Velazquez has experience with Belmont, having won the stakes with Union Rags in 2012 and with Rags to Riches in 2007.
Materiality’s main disadvantage will be coming in from the outside of the track – and in what is expected to be sloppy weather it could prove a problem for him as it did with Firing Line at the Preakness, who stumbled out of the gate due to the mud and finished 7th from the 8 post. But as long as he doesn’t stumble, Materiality could make a serious run at a stakes win.
Predicted Finish: 3rd
