De Gea is believed to have knocked back a £200k-a-week deal with the Red Devils, and Real Madrid are confident of snaring the Spaniard.
According to The Telegraph, United will use Benzema as leverage in a deal that involves De Gea heading in the opposite direction.
Benzema has been a long time target for Manchester United, and Louis van Gaal is looking to bolster his attack after the Red Devils decided against signing the disappointing Radamel Falcao on a permanent deal.
It is understood De Gea has not given the club a clear indication of his future plans, but United will want to sort it out before the 24-year-old becomes a free agent next season.
If De Gea is to leave the club, it is believed United will target Tottenham shot-stopper Hugo Lloris.
The France international has already indicated he would be interested in a move to Old Trafford, but it is understood Spurs will fight hard to keep him at White Hart Lane.
