Bermane Stiverne defends his WBC world heavyweight title against Deontay Wilder at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday night in one of the most highly-anticipated heavyweight clashes in years.
The 36-year-old made history last year as he defeated Chris Arreola to become the first Haitian-born heavyweight champion, and he has vowed that no one will ever hear about Wilder again after Saturday’s fight.
Stiverne (24-1-1) possesses great power and has experience after going the distance previously, where in contrast the challenger has never been beyond the fourth round before.
Wilder (32-0, 32 KOs) has blasted his way through the division thus far with his power, speed and athleticism, but he has faced constant criticism along the way regarding the quality of opposition he has faced.
His toughest test arguably came against Malik Scott last year, but he made short work of his rival and friend after claiming a first-round knockout.
The champion is expected to put up a tougher test and may well be able to take it into the later rounds in which we will find out more about Wilder, but there is also the fear factor in this as not many can withstand the power that the American possesses.
What makes this fight even more intriguing is the level of animosity between the pair as demonstrated in the press conference and subsequent head-to-head, as they had to be pulled apart after exchanging verbals in which both promised a painful night for the other.
While it did threaten to boil over with some personal digs, the talking is now done as the two men prepare for the biggest fight of their lives so far.
Leo Santa Cruz also features on the card, but Wilder and Stiverne are expected to make their way to the ring around 4am (UK time).
