Midfield
James Milner – The Bosman signing from Manchester City would prefer to play in the centre of the park, but is a victim of his own versatility in this system. He is an upgrade on any of the multiple players that Rodgers used at right wing-back last term.
Jordan Henderson – Liverpool’s prospective new captain stepped up last season with six goals and nine assists, and will again be the driving force in their midfield. But leading this team post-Steven Gerrard could prove too much for Henderson.
Joe Allen – Allen might not be the most exciting inclusion, but he is one of Rodgers’ most trusted servants, and many of Liverpool’s best performances last season came when he was in the side. Could be sacrificed if the Reds switch to 4-4-2.
Alberto Moreno – The £12m signing from Sevilla had a mixed first season at Anfield. He was exposed defensively when Liverpool played a four-man defence, but is much more suited to a role bombing up and down the left from wing-back.
