Juan Mata
Mata is United’s playmaker. He is the man the team rely upon to unlock opposition defences with his guile and incisive passing. Without him, they lack creativity.
Ander Herrera
United fans love Herrera, although Van Gaal seems slightly less keen. Nevertheless, the Dutchman gave in to the hype recently and started the former Athletic Bilbao against Bruges and Swansea.
He impressed in both and looks set to play a key role this season.
Memphis Depay
The Dutchman who prefers to be addressed by his first name adds pace and goals to United’s attack. He has yet to score in four Premier League games, but, once he settles, he will surely find the net on a regular basis.
Memphis bagged 22 goals in 30 Eredivisie matches last season and he has already notched twice in the Champions League for United.
Wayne Rooney
Rooney is going through a tough time right now, but his class is unquestioned and, as captain, he simply has to start.
Martial is an exciting young talent, but he will have to work his way into Van Gaal’s best XI.
