2. Diego Maradona
In 1991, the Argentine footballing legend was banned from the sport for 15 months after testing positive for cocaine whilst playing for Serie A giants Napoli.
He saw out his ban and played for Argentina at the 1994 World Cup and his erratic behaviour caused alarm bells to ring again.
Sure enough Maradona tested positive yet again and he was sent home in disgrace.
1. Lance Armstrong
Lance Armstrong was a hero.
Between 1999 and 2005, the American won seven successive Tour de France titles and could do no wrong.
Off the track, he was an inspirational cancer-survivor and philanthropist. But many had their suspicions.
They were right.
In June 2012, Armstrong was charged by USADA for with doping and drug trafficking.
He would contest the charges but continued to maintain his innocence despite being stripped of all seven of his Tour de France wins.
