On April 5th in a match against Manchester City, Southampton lost Jay Rodriguez to a ruptured cruciate knee ligament injury.
Their form abruptly dropped, eventually going down 4-1 to the champions elect with players visibly shaken before subsequent matches saw them lose to Cardiff City at home and play out a stalemate with Aston Villa.
Rodriguez’s 15 Premier League goals were instrumental in a hugely encouraging season for Saints, and was even being talked about as a contender to feature in England’s 2014 FIFA World Cup squad.
