Arsenal have been dealt the blow of Thomas Vermaelen rejecting a new contract offer to stay at the Emirates Stadium, according to the Daily Mail.
The likes of Manchester United, Barcelona and Napoli have been on alert for the Belgian international for much of the summer after his recent fall from favour in the pecking order in Arsene Wenger’s side.
Despite becoming one of the club’s most important players when he joined from Ajax in 2009, Vermaelen is now behind Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny in the centre-back reckoning, and could be set to make the controversial move to their rivals United.
The Red Devils are one of the clubs most interested in signing the 28-year-old, with Louis van Gaal desperate to make signings at the back to replace the departing duo of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.
Although Vermaelen has been far from at his best in recent times, his ability and experience seemingly make him a prime candidate for the new United boss to strengthen his back four.
