They emerged as World Series favorites after signing shortstop Hanley Ramirez and third baseman Pablo Sandoval in free agency.
Sandoval has not been able to live up to his $95 million contract so far, as he has only come up with 23 runs batted in so far.
The Red Sox’s underachieving may be explained by one thing, as Sandoval was benched by the team on Thursday for using Instagram.
Sandoval had been using the bathroom during a game, and he liked a picture of a woman on Instagram.
The three-time World Series champion admitted to liking pictures on Instagram. The player known as “Kung Fu Panda” has gone from a World Series title with the San Francisco Giants to a last-place first season with the Red Sox.
It remains to be seen whether the Red Sox can get back in the American League East race, and Red Sox fans are sure to question whether Sandoval is fully focused on baseball.
Although this is not as severe of a case, it is sure to remind Red Sox fans of when the team collapsed in 2011 and players were discovered to have indulged on fried chicken and beer in the locker room.
Red Sox beat writer Ian Browne announced the third baseman’s benching on Twitter.
