WBC world heavyweight champion Bermane Stiverne has labelled challenger Deontay Wilder a “clown” and intends on knocking him out on January 17.
The pair meet at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas next Saturday night and both men have revealed that training camp has gone well ahead of the biggest fight of their careers thus far.
Stiverne (24-1-1, 21 KOs) currently holds the belt while Wilder (32-0, 32 KOs) will be making the biggest step up of his career so far after being criticised for the level of opposition he has faced in the past.
The champion revealed that he has been training in the Mayweather Gym with numerous sparring partners and described camp as putting him in the “best shape I have ever been in”.
Meanwhile, Wilder delivered a similar assessment of his training but insists that he is the man to make the heavyweight division important again and he intends on proving that next week.
However, while the challenger kept his cool and was insistent that he would do his talking in the ring, Stiverne wasn’t as respectful and called Wilder a clown after being left unimpressed with his work in the sport so far.
“I think Wilder is a clown. Wilder thinks this is the WWE. He acts like this is the WWE. This is for real. It is going to hurt very bad,” Stiverne told the media.
When asked for a prediction, Stiverne promised he would knock his opponent out and create a “lasting image in peoples’ minds for a very long time”.
