Negotiations are still in progress between Mayweather and Pacquiao over a bout on May 2 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, but that hasn’t stopped Thurman from giving his prediction on who would win the fight.
The 26-year-old recently called out Amir Khan again and insisted that he would love to fight the Brit after his next bout which is against Roberto Guerrero on March 7.
However, he was asked for his opinion on the fight that everyone is talking about, and one that they all hope finally gets made after years of waiting.
“I still pick Mayweather, especially if the fight is happening at the MGM. Outside of that, Pacquiao needs to be the Pacquiao that made him famous. He needs to throw the punches, the combinations,” Thurman told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
“We know that Pacquiao is better than Cotto and Cotto gave Mayweather one hell of a fight. Maidana was able to land several good punches on Mayweather. I do see Pacquiao having a great chance of winning the fight, but I do believe that to truly win the fight he’s gonna have to at least create one to two knockdowns – a minimum of one knockdown to get that 10-8 round.”
Thurman added that while Pac-Man will have to be wary of Mayweather’s right hand, the fact that the American has suffered from multiple hand injuries and is now not known for his knockout prowess, the fight is a fifty-fifty with Mayweather getting the nod slightly.
Pacquiao told reporters that an agreement was “near” on Tuesday, and so fans are still waiting for an official announcement which pits the two best pound-for-pound fighters against each other.
