British super-middleweight star James DeGale has insisted that he is ready to make history on April 25 and it doesn’t matter who is in the opposite corner.
Following a press conference on Tuesday, it was confirmed that the 29-year-old would get a title fight on April 25 at the O2 Arena in London, with talks with Andre Dirrell on-going.
The news comes after Carl Froch opted to vacate the belt after insisting that a bout with DeGale did not motivate him as he continued to pursue a dream fight in Las Vegas against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
However, an elbow injury suffered in training ensured that Froch would be out of action until the summer at the earliest, and so he has made the decision to step aside.
As a result, DeGale will now get the opportunity to become the first British Olympic gold medallist to become a world champion in the professional ranks, and he insisted that it doesn’t matter who he faces.
“I am ready to make history. Doesn’t matter who it’s against,” DeGale told the media.
“It’s been a long time coming but I will be fighting for the World title and making history. I don’t care who I have to fight to do it.”
As previously reported, Dirrell will be the likely opponent given that he is ranked No.2 by the IBF behind DeGale, although the American could potentially be eager to avoid coming back to the UK after he was left disappointed and frustrated following a points loss to Froch back in 2009.
Nevertheless, it appears as though if he wants a shot at the title, he will have to travel and DeGale will be waiting to greet him as he edges closer to fulfilling his dream.
