Promoter Bob Arum has revealed that if Manny Pacquiao’s fight with Floyd Mayweather can’t be agreed, then his fighter will return on May 30 and could face Amir Khan.
ESPN writer Dan Rafael revealed on Twitter on Friday that he had spoken with Arum, who insisted that they are still waiting on Mayweather as he has sorted all the issues on his side and the networks have even overcome their issues.
The promoter suggested that he was resigned to it not happening but he did add that he had spoken directly with adviser Al Haymon and revealed that even they were on the same page.
Arum and Pacquiao have long insisted that they have agreed to all the terms of the fight laid out by Mayweather, including a 60-40 purse split in favour of the American along with the drug-testing plan, venue and date.
However, Mayweather hit back last week and insisted that Pacquiao can’t agree to anything as he has no say in negotiations and is merely just a “pawn”. Meanwhile, he blamed Arum for holding up the deal and insisted that he wanted the fight to happen.
Alex Ariza, Mayweather’s strength and conditioning coach slammed the media earlier this week for not getting proof from Arum to back up his claims, and so it appears as though there is still a deadlock between the two camps as fans face more frustration.
Nevertheless, Arum added if Pacquiao doesn’t fight Mayweather, then he will return to the ring on May 30 on HBO PPV and he revealed that he would consider setting up a fight in England against Khan.
Naturally, they still want the Mayweather fight and that will remain Plan A given that it would be the biggest fight in the history of boxing. However, Khan appears to be in contention if talks break down.
