Paulie Malignaggi has revealed that he is still considering his options over a ring return but he would love a shot at Kell Brook’s IBF title in the UK.
The New Yorker hasn’t fought since his devastating loss to Shawn Porter in April 2014, with Brook going on to defeat Porter in California in August to claim the IBF welterweight title.
The 34-year-old is in Manchester for a special boxing event later this month, and while he reminisced about his last fight in the UK back in 2008, he admits that a title shot against Brook could be enough to persuade him to return to the ring.
“I can’t figure out what I want to do, I think I’ll figure it out in the new year. I’m coming over to Manchester for this event and one of the things I’ve always wanted is to come back and fight in the UK,” he told Sportsmail.
“The fans always made me feel appreciated. Being part of this event in Manchester will go a long way to making me search deep inside me and remind me of the appreciation in the UK.
“Kell Brook has a world title so he interests any top welterweight. Who wouldn’t fancy a chance to win a world title?”
Malignaggi praised Brook’s patience and ability to work his way up through the rankings before finally landing his world title, and he conceded that it would be difficult for any fighter to turn down a title shot if one was available.
Brook will make his first title defence in March and although it is expected that he will have to face a mandatory challenger, no opponent has been named yet.
Should Malignaggi decide to return he will undoubtedly put his name in the mix for the date in Sheffield, but it remains to be seen whether or not the Sky Sports pundit decides to hang up his gloves for good.
