The deal to sign Paulinho takes a step closer.
Tottenham Hotspur are on the brink of completing a £17m deal to sign Paulinho from Corinthians as the Brazilian is at White Hart Lane undergoing a medical, reports BBC Sport.
The transfer has been rumbling on for some time with constant links concerning the 24-year-old, but if all goes well then Spurs will be able to announce their first summer signing before the week is out.
Paulinho himself has already spoken about his delight at moving to north London but as all fans know, no deal is truly done until it is confirmed by the club.
However, this particular saga seems to be drawing swiftly to a close and signing the Brazil international will break Tottenham’s record transfer – previously set by the £16.5m purchase of Luka Modric in 2008.
Little is known about the midfielder in Europe with Paulinho having spent his entire career in South America, bar a brief 10-month spell in Poland back in 2007/08.
However, in recent times the Brazilian has been seen strutting his stuff for the national team, including scoring the equalising goal against England in a 2-2 friendly earlier in 2013.
Paulinho is described as a box-to-box midfielder who is equally adept as sitting in front of the back four as he is charging into the opposition’s penalty area in support of the attackers.
The arrival of this latest acquisition would start the overhaul of the squad by manager Andre Villas-Boas as Spurs prepare for another top four challenge.
Last season saw the club amass their highest ever Premier League points tally with 72, but still miss out on Champions League football to rivals Arsenal and AVB will be hoping Paulinho provides that extra edge to go one better in 2013/14.
