According to several folks on the twittersphere, French magazine Le10Sport is reporting that Chelsea have agreed a deal in principle to sign Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes on a free transfer next summer.
Valdes, 31, has been with Barcelona his entire career but last season confirmed he would not extend his contract beyond next summer.
Barca president Sandro Rosell remains hopeful that the Spaniard could remain at the club but Valdes this week reiterated his desire to leave on a free transfer at the end of the current campaign.
A move to Chelsea would seem odd, however. The Blues boast stalwart Peter Cech, who remains one of the Premier League’s most consistent and impressive stoppers, while on loan Belgian international Thibaut Courtois, 21, is regarded as one of the most promising talents in Europe.
Interestingly, Courtois, who is currently in this third season at Atletico Madrid, has been linked with a move to Barcelona as a replacement for Valdes, which raises the possibility of a potential swap deal between Chelsea and Barca.
But quite why the Blues would swap Courtois for a player who is ten years older and arguably no better is a mystery…
