Gus Poyet is Sunderland’s new manager, according to leading journalist John Percy.
The Uruguayan has been handed a three-year deal at the Stadium of Light and succeeds Paolo Di Canio, who was sacked after picking up just one point from the club’s opening five Premier League matches.
Poyet has been out of work since an acrimonious departure from Brighton in May.
The news appeared to be verified by Sunderland defender Ondrej Celustka in this insightful tweet:
Gus Poyet was a successful player.
