Son Heung-Min chose Bayer Leverkusen over Manchester United…
South Korean starlet Son Heung-Min chose to join Bundesliga side Bayer Levserkusen ahead of Premier League champions Manchester United during the summer, his agent told German publication Bild.
The 21-year-old moved to Leverkusen this summer from Hamburg for £8m, which many saw as a bargain for the pacey forward with a prodigious talent.
Remarkably, Heung-Min’s agent Thies Bliemeister says that despite an offer from United, Son preferred the project and ambition of Leverkusen.
“Even United wanted Sonny. Manchester United were very interested in him. We had already held talks. Stories saying a deal between Hamburg and Manchester were reported,” he said.
Bliemeister did indicate however that Leverkusen may be used as a stepping stone for a bigger move later in his career.
“The interest [from Manchester United] was a great honor for Son. But Leverkusen has simply made the best impression. And as an intermediate step, Bayer is ideal for his career now.”
The news will be a further blow to United fans who endured a poor transfer window. After struggling to sign any first-team players throughout the entire summer, David Moyes eventually secured a deal for Belgian powerhouse Marouane Fellaini for £27.5m with only minutes left until the window closed.
They did through miss out on deals for Ander Herrera and Fabio Coeantrao, after previously failing to sign Thiago or Cesc Fabregas earlier in the summer. The news that talented forward Son turned down the Old Trafford also will cause further unrest among the United faithful.
