In a low-scoring affair at Suncorp Stadium, the Broncos were behind by a point with five minutes to go. But Oates crossed with 54 seconds left to give them the win.

When Matt Moylan calmly knocked over a field goal on 75 minutes, Penrith looked to have the gone won.
But Oates barged over and the Broncos secured victory in an entertaining finish to the match.
