It was a scrappy affair in Sydney, both sides making plenty of errors.
The first half was marred by mistakes, Cronulla edging ahead 2-0 thanks to a penalty.
In the second half the game came alive when five minutes in Corey Oates scored. Broncos halfback Ben Hunt sent Jack Reed through a gap and he offloaded a dubious pass to Oates right on the try-line to touch down.
The video referee couldn’t reverese the on-field call of try and Brisbane was in front.
In the 61st minute Lachalan Maranta added the Broncos’ second try with an easy four-pointer. Sam Thaiday smashed Sosaia Feki afer a long kick and Maranta cleaned up the spilled ball simply.
Cronulla fought to get back into the match but couldn’t get back in the contest, Jordan Kahu pulling off an amazing tackle. Jason Bukuya looked certain on 70 minutes to score but Kahu’s cover tackle was perfect.
The game was an arm wrestle but the Broncos will be thankful for the two points. Cronulla have yet to win this season, and on that evidence, have plenty of work to do turn their 2015 NRL campaign around.
