The Brooklyn Nets face the second of a tough three-game West road swing when they take on the Golden State Warriors at the ORACLE Arena on Thursday night.
However, their hosts are coming off the back of two disappointing losses against the San Antonio Spurs and Phoenix Suns, and turnovers are becoming a big issue for Steve Kerr’s team.
The Warriors (5-2) won their first five games by an average of 14.8 points, but they committed 20 turnovers against the Spurs before a season-high of 27 against the Suns.
Guard Klay Thompson insisted that it was better for it to happen now than in April, but he conceded that they must improve quickly and take better care of the basketball.
Golden State averaged 124.0 points in winning their first two home games before losing to the Spurs, but they will hope for an improved performance against Brooklyn against whom they have won eight of nine in the series at home.
Point guard Stephen Curry has been the most guilty in terms of letting his performances slip, and so he will hope to have a positive impact on Thursday night to re-ignite his team.
Meanwhile, the Nets (4-3) followed up back-to-back home wins against the New York Knicks and Orlando Magic with a disappointing loss in Phoenix, in a game in which they led by as many as 19 but went on to be outscored 63-41 in the second half.
Lionel Hollins’ men shot 27.5 percent after half-time with eight turnovers to six assists, and Joe Johnson admitted it was “hard to swallow” surrendering such a lead. The Nets star was highly critical of his teammates ahead of the contest, insisting that they had been playing “selfish” basketball.
The loss to Phoenix would have done little to ease the tension in the camp, but Johnson will look to continue to lead by example as he averages a team-high 20.0 points per game, including 24.7 in three road games.
