Timbers bested by League leaders
After a 4-2 defeat to the league leaders Portland Timbers Coach Caleb Porter was man enough to admit his side were totally outclassed on Friday.
Though there were several valid excuses for the poor performance, including the absence Gambian defender Pa Modou-Ka and Captain Will Johnson, as well as the fact that they had to play the second half with ten men.
Coach Porter offerered only one. Real Salt Lake were the better side.
Speaking to MLS soccer.com Porter was honest about the Timbers performance: ” The biggest factor, Real Salt Lake was better on the day.“They deserved to win the game. They showed why they’re the top team in the league at this point in the season.
“It’s humbling, we got a bit bloodied, we’re obviously all a bit disappointed by the scoreline, but hopefully in the big picture this is something that will make us better because we have to keep plugging away,”
“Bottom line, we can’t have a performance like we did today.”
Though the sending off of Ben Zemanski was undoubtedly a turning point, Porter refused to lay to much importance on it.
” I don’t think we lost the game because of the red card, I really don’t,” he said. “I think in the end we lost the game because we made mistakes and we lost the game because we didn’t perform as well as we’re capable of”.
