Spurs failed after Bale left and the Reds could face the same problem.
Check in to Liverpool vs Southampton FC
On Saturday it was confirmed that Liverpool had activated the £8.5m release clause of QPR striker Loic Remy and the Frenchman will become the second new striker at Anfield this summer along with Rickie Lambert.
The duo will be given the unenviable task of trying to cushion the blow of losing Luis Suarez in attack, after the Uruguay international agreed a £75m switch to Barcelona.
Both Lambert and Remy had solid enough Premier League seasons with Southampton and Newcastle United respectively last time out, but no one can claim either forward is anywhere near the same class as Suarez.
The Reds were of course put in a difficult position when it came to the future of their controversial top-scorer, who is currently serving a four-month ban for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 World Cup.
