Spurs weren’t slow in reinvesting that money either, spending over £110m on new talent including breaking their club record three times with the acquisition of Paulinho (£17m), then Roberto Soldado (£26m) and finally Erik Lamela (£30m).
Yet of the six new players who arrived at White Hart Lane, only £11.5m Christian Eriksen can be described as a real success and the poor form of the North Londoners in 2013/14 – they finished sixth – cost both Andre Villas-Boas and then Tim Sherwood their jobs as manager.
Rodgers is in a better position than Tottenham admittedly, with Suarez well supported last campaign by the impressive form of captain Steven Gerrard, Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge.
Yet no team can lose a forward of the calibre of the Uruguayan and not feel it and the Merseyside outfit need to heed the warning given by Spurs and not expect a host of new talent to solve the problem.
The likes of Lambert, Remy, Adam Lallana and in particular youngsters Emre Can and Lazar Markovic will need time to bed in and therefore Gerrard, Sturridge and co will need to take up the slack until that happens.
Rodgers is undoubtedly a quality coach, but this will be the biggest challenge of his career.
