In a see-sawing game where the lead changed humerous times, Canberra managed to see out the win by four points.
Jack Wighton got the first try of the match after just eight minutes. Soon after the Raiders got a penalty to make it 8-0.
But two minutes later Cronulla was back in the contest when Anthony Tupou touched down.
Then Wighton stepped up with a bit of magic. He fielded Ben Barba’s kick is in-goal, tapped the ball on the 20 metre line and ran 80 metres to score an awesome try.
Canberra dominated the first half and it finished with them 14-6 in front. But in the second period the Sharks stormed back with a trie to Sosaia Feki.
The Raiders replied with a try of their own to Jordana Rapana.
Then it was Cronulla’s turn, Ricky Leutele getting a try to put the Sharks back in the mix at 18-18.
Soon after a fight between Wighton and Cronulla’s Feki erupted, with both players sent to the sin-bin. The Sharks kicked the resulting penalty and they were now in front 20-18.
Then Sisa Waqu stepped up with an opportunistic try close to the line and Canberra was back in the lead 24-20 with 17 minutes left. It was a nervy ending, as the Sharks tried to find another try.
Mitch Brown went close with four minutes to go but Wighton redeemed himself with a textbook cover tackle, snuffing out Cronulla’s shot at a winning try.
The Raiders saw out the final minutes and will return home with the vital two points.
