There was controversy when Eto’o kicked the ball away from the goalkeeper.
Chelsea winger Eden Hazard scored a controversial equaliser for Chelsea at the weekend against Cardiff City after Samuel Eto’o kicked the ball away from the goalkeeper.
As David Marshall bounced the ball ready to restart play, Eto’o stood nearby and kicked it away from the ‘keeper before Hazard netted for the Blues’ first of four goals.
Cardiff were unhappy with the decision and want clarity on why the officials at Stamford Bridge allowed the decision to stand.
“We know it’s not going to make any difference to us, but we’ll ask for clarification on it,” Blue Birds manager Malky Mackay was quoted by the Guardian.
“Referees and linesmen are human. They’re not making these [mistakes] on purpose. I’ll ask Mike Riley and his team to look at it, and then I’ll accept what it is that comes back from them.
“We just ask for clarification on it now that I’ve seen the issue. That’s all.”
There seems to be some confusion about what the rule is concerning the issue, with both stoppers from the game unclear on whether the goal should have stood or not.
Marshall was under the impression that with the ball in the Scot’s hands, any opposition player had to be three metres away.
In the end the hosts netted four times and the 4-1 victory did not pivot on the decision, but at the time Cardiff held a 0-1 lead.
