Reports in the Daily Express carry quotes from the Italian, who explained that his star man was rested, rather than dropped for tactical or personal reasons, and bemoaned Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema’s lack of finishing for the defeat.
“Cristiano was tired and so did not start,” Ancelotti said. “We controlled the game until the penalty. We lacked depth and it is very difficult to play against Atletico, we needed to play more direct.
“It was difficult to look for opportunities and Benzema and Bale have tried, but did not succeed. Talk of crisis is exaggerated. We have a good chance of progressing in the tie and we will try with all our strength.”
