Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has admitted that he once tried to sign Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard for AC Milan, and was hoping to partner the Reds linchpin with Italian maestro Andrea Pirlo.

Reports in the Daily Mail explain that Ancelotti, who spent almost eight years with Pirlo at the San Siro in Serie A, tried to lure Gerrard from Anfield by sounding the move out, but failed because of Gerrard’s loyalty to Liverpool.
Ancelotti, whose Madrid team face Gerrard’s Liverpool in the Champions League next week, told reporters: “He’s one of the players I would have loved to coach. And I thought about him so many times in the past when I was at Milan.
“But it was impossible because he was very much linked with Liverpool. We had sounded him out but Gerrard’s bond with Liverpool was unbreakable. I don’t remember exactly what year it was but we did try.
“Of course, I wanted to pair him up with Pirlo, it was a fantastic combination. Putting Gerrard in midfield with Pirlo. It would have been fantastic.”
Gerrard was the star of the show as he inspired Liverpool’s comeback from 3-0 down against Milan in the 2005 Champions League final, and that was no doubt one of the many performances that caught the attention of Ancelotti.
The former England captain will be hoping that his team aren’t facing a similar scoreline when the Reds reach half-time of their clash with defending European champions Madrid on Wednesday.
