It only took a day for him to find a new home though as the Carolina Panthers have claimed him off waivers.
Martin filled in for 49ers starting right tackle Anthony Davis after a sprained MCL forced him to the bench, but the 49ers offensive line struggled to protect quarterback Colin Kaepernick with him as a starter.
The Panthers are in need of offensive line help though as Byron Bell failed to pan out as a reliable starting left tackle. They signed Michael Oher to a two-year contract before claiming Martin.
Martin began his career with the Miami Dolphins after being taken by them in the second round of the 2012 draft, but he and the rest of the Dolphins offensive line made life miserable for quarterback Ryan Tannehill as they allowed a whopping 58 sacks in 2013.
A bullying scandal surfaced as Martin was found to have been tormented by guard Richie Incognito and other teammates, and he eventually snapped and left the team. He will benefit from having a mobile quarterback in Cam Newton to protect.
The Panthers’ official Twitter account announced the claiming of Martin.
