The Carolina Panthers received a lot of help from their running game as they defeated the Kansas City Chiefs, 28-16 in their latest preseason match.
The Carolina Panthers pulled away from the Kansas City Chiefs in the third quarter en route to a 28-16 victory.
Quarterback Cam Newton struggled in this game with 65 yards on 4-for-9 passing, but Derek Anderson filled in nicely as threw for 91 yards and a touchdown on 5-for-8 passing.
Running back Jonathan Stewart made the most of his playing time with 26 yards and two touchdowns on four carries. Fozzy Whitaker led the team in rushing with 71 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.
Rookie wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin also continued to emerge as the Panthers’ top weapon as he led the team in receiving yards with 41 on two receptions.
For the Chiefs, quarterback Alex Smith looked efficient in his start. Rookie Aaron Murray made his preseason debut and threw for 81 yards and a touchdown on 5-for-9 passing, but he threw an interception.
Running backs Cyrus Gray and Knile Davis both turned in quality performances, and this is refreshing in wake of Jamaal Charles’ foot injury.
Gray led the Chiefs in rushing with 44 yards on 10 carries while Davis added 30 yards on nine carries.
Tight end Travis Kelce continued to establish himself as a key weapon by leading the team with 63 receiving yards and a touchdown on four receptions.
