Cesar Azpilicueta has signed a new five year contract with Chelsea, the clubs official website has announced.
The full back, who joined the Blues in 2012, has become a key part of Jose Mourinho’s side, so far starting all three of Chelsea’s Premier League matches this season.
That is despite the recent signing of Filipe Luis, who moved to Stamford Bridge from Atletico Madrid in a £20 million deal.
It was expected that Luis would slot straight into the Chelsea team, possibly at the expense of Azpilicueta. However, the Spaniard’s excellent form has meant that the former Atletico Madrid man has had to wait for his first start.
Azpilicueta has become a fan favourite at Stamford Bridge with Blues fans nicknaming him “Dave”.
Last season, he won the Chelsea players’ player of the year award following a campaign where he was part of the tightest defence in the Premier League, with the Blues conceding just 27 goals in 38 games.
In his first season with the club he managed to get his hands on some silverware, lifting the Europa League trophy in Amsterdam as Chelsea beat Portuguese side Benfica 2-1.
Azpilicueta will hope to win more silverware with Chelsea this season with the London club favourites to win the Premier League title amongst several bookmakers.
