It was the fourth penalty miss in a row for the 28-year-old, but fortunately for Vicente Del Bosque, it didn’t cost his side on the night as they held on to claim a 1-0 victory against Ukraine.
Spain ended top of Group C with nine wins from their 10 games, while Slovakia joined them in the automatic qualification spots as Ukraine will now have to come through the playoffs.
Nevertheless, it was a worrying night for the former World champions despite Mario Gaspar’s first-half header which secured the victory. Spain were far from convincing in the game, and it remains to be seen if they are capable of defending their crown in France next summer to make it three consecutive European Championship triumphs.
It was a frustrating night in general for Fabregas too, and ultimately it was a continuation of his issues for Chelsea so far this season.
Jose Mourinho’s side are languishing in 16th place in the Premier League after eight games, having picked up just two wins as they look to defend their title.
The Blues trail league leaders Manchester City by 10 points, but they will look to bounce back and prove that they have regrouped over the international break when they face Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.
Mourinho was spotted in the stands during the Spain game, as reported by The Mirror, and he may well have been left disappointed with what he saw from his star midfielder.
