Not a lot of people gave the Buckeyes a chance to return to the top after an unexpected loss to Virginia Tech in Week 2. But they scratched and clawed their way to a 7-1 record and 4 straight Big Ten wins before their game on the road against #8 Michigan State. Not only did Ohio State win, they thoroughly dominated Michigan State, avenging a loss the season before and putting them back on top in the Big Ten – where they’ve found themselves twice in the last two years under head coach Urban Meyer but unable to get any farther either because of upset losses or NCAA sanctions.
But now the Buckeyes are back on top, and based on how well QB J.T. Barrett has played, they could be there until the end of the season and maybe even beyond.
Here are the five biggest winners from Week 11 of college football:
Ohio State – Avenging their loss to Michigan State from last year’s title game was one thing, but now they are the prohibitive favorite to represent the Big 10 in the College Football playoffs if they
TCU – The Horned Frogs are just one win and one loss by a top 4 team from moving into the College Football playoffs. And thanks to NCAA scheduling, Alabama and Mississippi State will be facing off next week. The ironic thing would be for TCU to make the playoffs but lose the Big XII title.
Oregon – Getting a chance to move up in the CFP standings (thanks to the Auburn loss) is one thing, but by virtue of beating the Utah Utes, the Ducks have stamped their ticket to the Pac-12 title game.
Arizona State – The Sun Devils thoroughly dominated Notre Dame last night. With a loss to Oregon being the only mark on their record this season, it will be exciting to see if the two teams play again in a rematch for the Pac-12 title.
Alabama – Easily the biggest winner of the week, not only did the Crimson Tide get a critical road win after nearly squandering their season, but by virtue of Auburn losing, they are virtually guaranteed to move into the College Football playoffs this week.
