The East Carolina Pirates beat the SMU Mustangs, 45-24, and they improved their record to 4-1 as SMU fell to 0-5.

No. 22 East Carolina ensured their stay in the top 25 as they improved their record to 4-1 with a 45-24 over SMU. The Pirates held the lead the entire game, but the Mustangs made it somewhat of a game when they trimmed the lead to 35-24 at the end of the third quarter.
The Pirates are off to a 1-0 start in American Athletic Conference play while the Mustangs fall to 0-5 overall.
However, the Pirates scored 10 unanswered points to seal the win. Quarterback Shane Carden threw for 410 yards and four touchdowns on 31-of-41 passing.
Wide receivers Isaiah Jones and Justin Hardy each had fantastic games. Jones caught nine passes for 130 yards and a touchdown while Hardy added another eight catches for 120 yards and two touchdowns.
For the Mustangs, quarterback Garrett Krstich threw for 339 yards with two touchdowns and one interception on 42-of-67 passing. The running game was kept under wraps as the Mustangs were held to 51 rushing yards.
Wide receiver Darius Joseph caught 13 passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns.
