No. 9 Notre Dame came away with a huge win over No. 14 Stanford on a day filled with upsets by beating them, 17-14. The Cardinal appeared to have the game wrapped up as they took a 14-10 lead with three minutes left.
The Fighting Irish were facing a fourth-and-11 play with just over a minute remaining in the game, but quarterback Everett Golson threw a touchdown pass to tight end Ben Koyack to seal the win for the Irish. The Irish improved their record to 5-0 as the Cardinal fell to 3-2.
Golson finished with 241 passing yards and two touchdowns with one interception on 20-of-43 passing. Although his numbers were not gaudy, they came against a top-ranked Stanford scoring defense, so his clutch touchdown pass may give him some ground in the Heisman race.
The Irish defense also shined once again as Cardinal quarterback Kevin Hogan was held to 158 yards and two interceptions on 18-of-36 passing.
However, he was able to score a 10-yard rushing touchdown early in the game. The Stanford running game was only able to muster 47 yards on 32 carries.
