Arizona State stuns USC – Arizona State beats USC with last-second Hail Mary touchdown, 38-34
No. 10 Arizona pulled off the first upset in a thrilling week of college football when they defeated Oregon, who was No. 2 at the time. They beat them 31-24 in Oregon’s home stadium to improve to 5-0.
Wildcats quarterback Anu Solomon performed efficiently, throwing for 287 yards with one touchdown and one interception on 20-of-31 passing. He has thrown for a total of 14 touchdown passes this season, including five in a huge comeback victory against Cal.
Running backs Terris Jones-Grigsby and Nick Wilson both looked excellent as they respectively rushed for 115 and 92 yards. Jones-Grigsby rushed for one touchdown while Wilson found the end zone twice.
Meanwhile, the Trojans suffered a heartbreaking loss after Arizona State stunned them with a game-winning Hail Mary touchdown pass from quarterback Mike Bercovici. He torched the USC defense for 510 yards and five touchdowns en route to a 38-34 victory.
Trojans quarterback Cody Kessler looked ordinary as he threw for 273 yards without a touchdown pass, but running back Javorius “Buck” Allen shined with 143 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries.
USC currently sits at 3-2, and they have been a bipolar team this season. They have looked great in games such as a road win over Stanford and a home win against Oregon State, where they held the Beavers to 10 points.
However, they have also looked vulnerable against Boston College and Arizona State. Their defense in particular allowed 37 points or more and allowed too many big plays.
The Trojans are hungry for a bounceback win, but they have proven to have difficulty with handling a spread offense, so there is little reason to believe they can beat the Wildcats on the road.
Prediction: Arizona 34, USC 27
