The #23 Missouri Tigers host the #13 Georgia Bulldogs in a critical SEC East matchup that could send the winner to the SEC Championship.
Both Missouri and Georgia are 4-1 with their sole losses coming against presently unranked teams – Missouri losing to Big Ten underachiever Indiana and Georgia losing to Steve Spurrier’s South Carolina Gamecocks. Neither team seems to have the kind of grit that will put them in contention for the college football playoffs, but both have a huge change to clinch a spot in the SEC East title with a win today.
Georgia is the huge story. RB Todd Gurley was suspended this week after alleged violations of NCAA rules and may be gone for the rest of the season. Gurley was considered a Heisman favorite with his penchant for finding the endzone – 8 TDs and an incredible 8.4 yards/carry in 5 games. Without Gurley, the Bulldogs will need to rely on Hutson Mason’s barely-above-average passing and an increased workload for RBs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel.
After losing to Indiana on September 20, the Tigers were able to top the Gamecocks to reclaim a spot in the top 25 polls before their Week 6 bye. Now Missouri QB Maty Mauk faces back-to-back games against the top contenders for the SEC East with a trip to Florida next week.
Prediction: Missouri – Home game plus coming off a bye-week minus the prospect of having to play the nation’s best RB equals an upset win for the Missouri Tigers and a critical Week 8 matchup against the Florida Gators.
