The #4 Alabama Crimson Tide defeated the Tennessee Volunteers 34-20 thanks to a record setting performance by star WR Amari Cooper.
Amari Cooper exploded in the first quarter with an 80-yard TD from QB Blake Sims on the first drive for Alabama. He followed that up exactly 4 minutes later with a 41-yard TD. A rushing TD from T.J. Yeldon late in the first and a 28-yard rushing TD from Sims early in the 2nd quarter gave Alabama a 27-0 lead. The Crimson Tide gave up 17 unanswered points to cut the score to 27-17 in the third quarter, but a 28-yard TD run by Derrick Henry late in the 3rd gave the Tide the lead for good.
Stat-wise the two teams were fairly evenly matched, both of them giving the ball away twice and performing similarly in the rushing game, but ultimately coming down to the extraordinary play by Amari Cooper, who finished the game with 224 receiving yards – breaking the record previously held by Julio Jones.
With the win, the Crimson Tide rose to 7-1 on the season and are 3rd in the SEC West division with a bye week upcoming and a final four-game stretch that includes LSU, Mississippi State, Western Carolina before the Iron Bowl against Auburn.
With the loss for the Vols, Tennessee falls to 3-5 and have gone 0-4 in the SEC. The Vols are now in 6th place in the SEC and are 13th overall.
