The five-time champion started the match brightly, bagging himself 13 reds and blacks, but suffered a crisis of confidence later on.
And O’Sullivan broke the dress code four frames later by removing his shoes and playing without them, and he did so until he had to borrow a pair from the tournament director, Mike Ganley.
The Rocket recovered sufficiently, though, to punish Steadman’s mistakes to build a lead before proceedings resume on Wednesday evening.
O’Sullivan has had issues with his footwear before, having played in soft shoes during December’s UK Championship after breaking his ankle.
This time, though, he gave his discarded shoes to a fan in the audience as he continued to breeze through the frames, and even stopped to ask officials what the prize money would be as he made his way to a max of 104.
