Goals from Cahill and Terry helped turn thematch around.
Watch official Chelsea v Southampton highlights.
Chelsea keep the pressure up on Premier League leaders Arsenal as the west London club came back from an early hiccup to beat Southampton 3-1 at Stamford Bridge.
Michael Essien was handed the midfielder’s first start of the season by manager Jose Mourinho, but it looked like a mistake as the Ghana international gifted Jay Rodriguez a goal in the first minute.
Straight from kick-off the Saints pushed forward and a poor back pass from Essien was gathered by Rodriguez, who slotted the ball past Petr Cech.
Demba Ba was brought on for the 31-year-old at half-time and changed the entire dynamic, with the Blues bouncing back with goals from two unlikely sources – Gary Cahill and John Terry.
It was the captain’s 400th Premier League appearance and the strike to make it 2-1 was the icing on the cake on what was a great day for the centre-back.
Ba then latched onto a Ramires cross late on and guided the ball in well to ensure all three points went to the hosts.
For the away team that’s now back-to-back defeats, which sees them drop to seventh and with Manchester City coming up next weekend things aren’t letting up any time soon.
