Chelsea have all but completed a huge move for Atletico Madrid forward Diego Costa, reports Spanish publication El Confidencial.
According to the story, the Blues have met the Spanish forward’s €60m release clause, and the 25-year-old will move to Stamford Bridge officially on June 30th, when the transfer window opens.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has made no secret of his desire to sign a world-class forward, and it appears that he has settled on the powerful Atletico man.
Costa has shot to prominence this term, scoring 25 goals in La Liga and seven in the Champions League, giving his side a very realistic chance of winning both competitions.
Interestingly, Chelsea will get to see next season’s potential spearhead at close quarters very soon, as they have drawn Atletico in the semi-finals of Europe’s premier club competition.
The striker is incredibly strong, prides himself on his work-rate and tenacity, and can finish off either foot.
Currently, Chelsea forwards Samuel Eto’o, Demba Ba and Fernando Torres have only notched 15 Premier League goals between them.
To fund the potentially monstrous deal, Jose Mourinho may sanction the sale of currently on loan forward Romelu Lukaku. The young Belgian is prodigiously talented, although fell out with Chelsea’s Portuguese boss earlier in the season. Arsenal are interested, but it’s expected that Chelsea would prefer to sell to a side outside of the Premier League.
Costa provides the strength and physicality of Lukaku, but has far superior hold up play. In this respect, the recently capped Spanish forward is just as important to the side when he isn’t scoring as when he is, although normally is!
If a €60m deal is completed, it would fall just below Fernando Torres’s record British transfer record, when the Blues shelled out £50m for his services in 2011.
