Chelsea and Liverpool sent scouts to watch Hoffenheim’s Brazilian playmaker Roberto Firmino this weekend in the Bundesliga, according to German publication Bild.
The 22-year-old has been sublime this term, scoring 13 goals and assisting eight in the German top flight.
The young attacker prefers to play ahead of the midfield behind a striker, and relishes being given a creative licence in the final third.
Premier League rivals Chelsea and Liverpool both watched the Brazilian score for Hoffenheim during his side’s 4-2 defeat to Mainz.
Firmino bagged a volley from the edge of the area, and his overall performance would have impressed the scouts.
There’s a reported £12m price tag on Firmino’s head, but the Premier League giants will have to compete with the likes of AC Milan and Inter Milan for his signature, as the Italian clubs are also interested.
The Brazilian is technically excellent, and has the ability to thread intricate through balls to his teammates. He is very comfortable in possession, and likes to use his body to shield the ball from the opposition. Firmino also has a powerful shot, and is capable of scoring from outside of the box.
Chelsea already have Oscar in the no.10 position, while Liverpool similarly have diminutive Brazilian Coutinho available for selection.
Firmino though would undoubtedly strengthen both squads, although the Reds probably need his services more than Chelsea right now.
Brendan Rodgers has a strong first team, but will need to strengthen his squad in the summer with his side potentially playing Champions League football next term.
Chelsea lost to Aston Villa on Saturday, but are still favourites for the Premier League title, and have a Champions League tie with Galatasaray to play on Tuesday.
