The father of Napoli ace Edinson Cavani says his son wants to move to Real Madrid rather than to the Premier League with Manchester City or Chelsea.
Chelsea and Manchester City have suffered a blow as Edinson Cavani’s father has stated that the Napoli striker hopes to sign for Real Madrid rather than move to the Premier League.
“The intention of Edinson is to play for a team like Real Madrid,” Luis Cavani told Spanish publication Marca.
“Our son has told the family in private that he wants to play in Madrid.”
That follows words from his mother yesterday, who told Uruguayan radio that her son was closer to Manchester City and Real Madrid than Chelsea.
“Edi is dealing with Real Madrid and City,” said Berta Cavani in quotes reported by the Daily Mirror.
“Napoli president De Laurentiis has spoken with Chelsea, but so far there is nothing concrete.”
The Uruguay international has scored 13 goals in 49 matches for his country, having often been deployed on the right wing with Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez typically in more advanced and central roles.
However, it is his club form which has attracted the attention of elite clubs across the continent.
Cavani scored 29 goals and provided five assists in 34 Serie A appearances this past season, meaning he was directly involved in exactly a goal per game.
In the UEFA Europa League, his productivity was even better.
The 26 year-old scored seven times and laid on three assists in his ten matches in the competition, and finished as second top scorer despite Napoli being eliminated in the last 32 of the tournament.
Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester City would do well to sign him, but with a release clause of €65 million he would not come cheap.
Marca claim Real Madrid also have Liverpool forward Luis Suarez and Robert Lewandowski of Borussia Dortmund on their shortlist.
