Mangala could be coming to Old Trafford.
FC Porto central defender Eliaquim Mangala reportedly prefers Manchester United to their arch rivals Manchester City and Chelsea, as he sets his eyes on playing in the ‘spectacular’ Premier League, but the Red Devils’ new boss Louis van Gaal has not made signing the 23-year old a priority, reports the Guardian.
The Dutch boss is keen to add to his centre-back positions following the exit of the veteran duo Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, but is reportedly unsure of Mangala’s temperament at the highest level.
Van Gaal, who will take over the reins at Old Trafford after the 2014 World Cup, has instead set his sights on more experienced defenders such as Mats Hummels of Borussia Dortmund and AS Roma’s Mehdi Benatia – who are considered to be reliable enough to lead the new-look United defence next season.
The Red Devils’ existing centre-backs Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and Phil Jones are also waiting to see the roles they will be offered by the new coach and the young trio might have to continue as backup players in the squad until they impress enough to push for a regular spot in the side.
