The Real Madrid star will be sidelined for months after struck down playing for Germany.
Real Madrid and Germany midfielder Sami Khedira was a transfer target for Chelsea and Manchester United but the duo have pulled out after an injury to the player, reports talkSPORT.
In the 1-1 draw with Italy on Friday the 26-year-old suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury – a dreaded problem for footballers that can end careers.
It effectively means Khedira’s season is over and there are even doubts as to whether the German will be fit enough to travel to the World Cup in Brazil next summer.
The midfield ace had become frustrated at the Santiago Bernabeu this season and was open to the idea of a switch to the Premier League.
Blues manager Jose Mourinho worked with Khedira for three years when the 50-year-old was in charge of Los Blancos and a reunion seemed to be on the cards.
United however were also interested in the German, as they picked up their attempts from the summer when the English champions offered €40m for the player.
Yet this new development has put off both clubs, as neither want to sign a midfielder who could return from injury in much poorer form.
National team manager Joachim Loew has voiced the 53-year-old’s concern over Khedira’s injury.
“This is a bitter blow for Sami and all of us,” Loew was quoted by talkSPORT.
“We wish him all the best and keep our fingers crossed that the surgery goes well and he can quickly get into rehab.”
