Mou couldn’t guarantee Japan star first team football ahead of Ozil.
Jose Mourinho has revealed he tried to sign Shinji Kagawa for Real Madrid but could not guarantee the Japanese playing time ahead of Mesut Ozil, now of Arsenal.
Kagawa joined Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund for £17m in summer 2012 but could have ended up in Spain had it not been for Ozil.
Explaining why a move for Kagawa did not materialise, Chelsea boss Mourinho said: “It was not being able to always play at Real Madrid.
“My first choice at the time was Mesut Ozil.
“I told him honestly without hiding it.”
With Wayne Rooney currently playing in the hole behind Robin van Persie, Kagawa is facing a battle for his favoured position at Old Trafford and has been linked with a return to Dortmund in January or next summer.
