Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has apparently offered young Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois a starting role next season, ahead of Petr Cech, reports reliable Spanish publication El Confidencial.
It has recently been claimed that the 21-year-old would sign another loan deal with Atletico Madrid, meaning stalwart stopper Petr Cech would remain between the sticks for at least another season at Stamford Bridge.
The Spanish publication though reckons that Mourinho has grown tired of Cech’s mistakes, and can no longer ignore the brilliant form of Courtois between the sticks.
As a result, he will offer Courtois the chance to start as Chelsea’s no.1 keeper next season, with Cech having to content himself with a place on the bench, or a transfer out of the club.
This term, Courtois has arguably been better than any keeper in world football. He has an enormous frame, but his agility and reflexes has seen him pull off a number of crucial saves in massive fixtures for Atletico Madrid.
In fact, his performances have been a key reason that Diego Simeone’s side have a genuine chance of La Liga glory, and are well placed in the Champions League quarterfinals.
While Cech has been a mainstay in the Chelsea side that have by far and away the best defensive record in the Premier League, he’s made some big mistakes in important matches.
In the Champions League quarterfinal first leg against PSG last week, the Czech stopper conceded a feeble goal inside his near post late on, which makes the Blues’ chances of getting through to the semi-finals very hard.
Cech has been a loyal servant to Chelsea for the entirety of the Roman Abramovich era, having been brought to the club by Mourinho during the Portuguese manager’s first stint in charge.
However, the excellent form of Courtois is impossible to ignore, and Mourinho has proven in the past that he’s willing to drop an established goalkeeper – with his treatment of Iker Casillas at Real Madrid.
